A

Abductee
Someone who has been abducted and later returned by extraterrestrial beings.

Afterlife
The existence of life, in one form or another, following death.

Altered State of Consciousness (ASC)
A different state of consciousness compared to the "normal" states of waking or sleeping. These states can be deliberately induced by the individual themselves or can be as a result of hypnotism.
They can also result following a Near Death Experience.

Angel
A benevolent spiritual being.

Animal PSI (ANPSI)
Psychic phenomena and abilities exhibited by animals.

Anomalous Experience
An unusual experience that deviates from the common rules and is difficult or impossible to attribute to a “normal” explanation.

Anomalous Phenomena
Natural phenomena that cannot currently be explained by science.

Anomaly
Something that is strange, it deviates from the common rules and is difficult to classify.

Anti-Christ
“Against Christ”.

Apparition
The visual appearance of a spirit or other paranormal entity.

Apport
A physical item which appears in a way that cannot be explained, this is most commonly reported during Séances with a Medium.

Astral Body
The spiritual form of a physical body.
This can temporarily separate from the body during Astral Projection or permanently separate at the moment of death.

Astral Plane
The plane of existence that the dead first travel through. This is also the same plane used during Astral Projection.

Astral Projection
The controlled and deliberate separation of the Astral Body from the physical body, resulting in an "out of body experience".

Astrology
The study of astronomical events and how they influence events on earth.

Aura
The energy field that is believed to surround all living beings.

Automatic Art
A practitioner's ability to create art without direct conscious control or the knowledge of what is being created. The finished article is thought to be the result of paranormal influence on the practitioner.

Automatic Writing
A practitioner's ability to write without direct conscious control or the knowledge of what is being written. The finished article is thought to be the result of paranormal influence on the practitioner.

Automatism
A practitioner's ability to sketch, write, play a musical instrument or perform other physical tasks without direct conscious control or the knowledge of what is being done. It is thought that the practitioner is being controlled by paranormal forces.

Autoscopy
The viewing of one's own physical body during an out-of-body experience.

B

Banshee
A female spirit from Gaelic mythology whose appearance or wailing announces a forthcoming death.

Benevolent Spirit
A spirit having no bad intentions.

Bio-PK
Psychokinetic influences affecting biological processes.

Black Arts
Various practices associated with harm, negativity and evil.

Black Mass
A travesty of the Christian Mass for use by worshippers of Satan.

Black Magic
Magic rituals and/or spells intended to harm others.

Boggart
In Yorkshire - a mischievous and hostile fairy.

C

Cartomancy
A form of Divination using cards such as Tarot.

Cerebral Anoxia (Cerebral Hypoxia)
The lack of oxygen to the brain and other organs, possibly resulting in hallucinations and visual disturbances.

CETI
Communication with Extraterrestrial Intelligence.

Chakras
Believed by some to be vital for the soul's well-being.
There are seven: base - red, sacral - orange, solar plexus - yellow, heart - green, throat - blue, brow (third eye) - indigo and crown - violet.

Channelling
The process of receiving messages from the spirit world.

Charm
A magic spell or an object which possesses magical properties.

Chiromancy
Better known as Palmistry – the art of reading someone's character and future from the lines on the palms of their hands.

Circle
A group of people who assemble to perform Séances.

Clairaudience
The ability to hear voices and sounds from the spirit world.

Clairsentience
The paranormal ability to deem information using senses other than the normal five.

Clairvoyance
The ability to perceive information beyond the range of normal perception.

Clairvoyant
A person with the abilities of Clairvoyance.

Clairvoyant Medium
A person with Clairvoyance abilities, who can obtain information, usually by spirit communication and without the need to enter into a trance state.

Cold Reading
A "paranormal" reading given with very general references that could relate to anyone.

Collective Apparition
An apparition seen by more than one person at the same time.

Communication
Communication with the spirit world.

Communicator
A spirit who communicates with a Medium.

Contactee
A person who has had contact with an extraterrestrial.

Cosmic Consciousness
An individual who experiences the entire universe as a living being.

Coven
An assembly of witches.

Crisis Apparition
Close to the point of death, a person may project their image to family members and close friends, these people may perceive this image as a ghost.

Crop Circles
Circular and elaborate patterns created in growing crops, thought by some to be associated with UFOs.

Curse
Spoken or written words intended to cause harm.

D

Deathbed Experience
When a dying person senses the presence of deceased family members and/or friends.

Déjà-vu
When experiencing something for the first time, the feeling of having experienced it before.

Dematerialisation
The disappearance, by paranormal means, of a physical object.
The disappearance of an apparition.

Demonic Possession
The taking control of a living thing by an evil spirit(s).

Deport
A physical item which is moved or disappears in a way that cannot be explained.

Devil
The supreme evil spirit.

Direct Voice
A voice heard during a Séance that does not appear to emanate from any of the group.

Direct Voice Mediumship
A spirit which physically speaks through an entranced Medium.

Discarnate Entity
An entity with no physical body.

Divination
Communication with the spirit world.
Fortune telling using supernatural powers and/or various techniques such as tarot cards.

Divining Rod
A rod used in the art of dowsing.

Doppelgänger (Doppelganger)
An identical ghostly double of a living person, often seen by the person themselves.

Dowsing
A paranormal ability to detect hidden substances such as water, or bodies, or other objects by use of a divining rod or pendulum.

E

Ectoplasm
A viscous substance exuded from an entranced Physical Medium from which a materialisation may form.

Electronic Voice Phenomena (EVP)
Voices and or/sounds which are believed to be of paranormal origin, not heard at the time but captured on a recording device.

Elemental Spirit
An ancient spirit associated with either fire, earth, air or water.

EMF
Electro-magnetic field.

Evil Eye
The apparent ability of some to cause harm to others just by looking at them.

Evocation
The act of summoning spirits by the use of rituals or magic.

Exorcism
The act of expelling evil spirits.

Extrasensory Perception (ESP)
The paranormal ability to acquire information other than through the normal five senses.

Extraterrestrial (ET)
Something that did not originate on Earth.

False Awakening
A person believes they are awake but are in fact still dreaming.

Focal Person
A living person who is the focus of poltergeist activity.

G

Ghost
In general terms - the apparition of a dead person/creature.

Glossolalia
Speaking in tongues - not conversing in an actual language.

Gremlin
A small mischievous gnome/pixie.

Guardian Angel
An angel who is assigned to care for an individual.

Guide
A spirit whom guides an individual on their spiritual journey.

H

Hallucination
The perception of events and/or objects that have no physical reality.

Haunt
To visit or inhabit as a ghost.

Hex
To affect someone or something by use of an evil spell.

Hyperaesthesia
Extremely acute sensory awareness.

Hypnagogic
The transitional state between being awake and asleep - a period of semi-consciousness.

Hypnopompic
The transitional state between being asleep and being awake - a period of semi-consciousness.

I

Immortality
Being exempt from death.

Infrasound
Very low frequency sounds which are outside of the human hearing range - sound waves which may be "felt".

Incubus
An evil spirit that usually has sexual intentions towards sleeping women.

Indirect Voice
A spirit which speaks using the voice-box of a Medium.

Invocation
The act of summoning benevolent spirits.

Kirlian Photography
A photographic technique which shows the auras surrounding objects.

Levitation
The act of raising of an object or person by paranormal means.

Ley lines
Invisible pathways along which energies flow.

Life after Death
The belief that the soul survives in another form following the death of the physical body.

Lucifer
A fallen archangel - the Devil.

M

Malevolent Spirit
An evil spirit capable of causing harm

Materialisation
The visual formation of a ghost, spirit or other object especially during a Séance.

Meditation
The act of mental control to promote calmness and heighten spiritual awareness.

Medium
A person with the ability to act as an intermediary between spirits and the living.

Mediumship
The activities of a Medium.

Mental Mediumship
The ability for a Medium to obtain mental information by paranormal means.

Metamorphosis
The change or appearance of a physical form by paranormal means.

Mind Reading
The paranormal ability by one person to read the thoughts of another.

N

Near-Death Experience (NDE)
Having come close to death.
Those who have a experienced a NDE often report seeing one or more of the following: a fast replay of their life, dead friends and relatives, and a journey down a long tunnel towards a bright light.

Necromancy
Communication with the dead to gain information concerning future events or to influence such events.

O

Omen
A sign which indicates a future event.

Orb
A photographic light anomaly, usually spherical in shape.
Believed by some to be of paranormal origin - the first stage of a spirit's manifestation.

Ouija Board
Ouija derives from the French and German words for "Yes".
These boards are used as a communication device with the spirit world.

Out-of-Body Experience (OBE)
Whilst fully conscious, a person's centre of awareness appears to be outside of their physical body.

Paranormal
Something which cannot currently be explained by science.

Parapsychology
The scientific investigation of the paranormal.

Past-Life Memories
The retained memories of past lives.

Past-Life Regression
Using hypnosis, a person is regressed back to a past life or lives.

Pendulum
An object suspended on a thread and often used for dowsing.

Phantasm
An apparition, a ghost.

Photographic Anomaly
Something captured on camera that is out-of-the-ordinary and difficult to explain, such as an orb.

Physical Mediumship
A Medium who has the ability to produce physical phenomena such as materialisations.

PK
Abbreviation of Psychokinesis.

Planchette
Usually a heart-shaped platform supported on three small legs with a centre hole to accommodate a pen. Fingers are placed on the Planchette and hopefully it is then moved by paranormal means to produce symbols and/or words.

Poltergeist
From German and meaning “Noisy Spirit”.
A mischievous or malevolent spirit which may cause, amongst other things, noises and the movement of objects.
Poltergeist activity is usually focused on a particular person.

Possession
The act of a spirit (often evil) taking control of a person.

Precognition
A person's paranormal ability to become aware of events before they happen.

Pre-Existence
The belief that the soul exists prior to its union with a physical body.

Premonition
An experience which indicates a future event.

Presence
Something such as a spirit which is sensed to be present.

Prophecy
A prediction of a future event.

PSI
Parapsychological Psychic Phenomena or Powers.
A term used to encompass all paranormal abilities.

Psyche
The mind, the soul.

Psychic
A person who has PSI abilities.

Psychokinesis (PK)
The ability to move physical objects with the mind.

Psychometry
The paranormal ability to read an object's history and the history of those associated with it.

Pyrokinesis
The paranormal ability by some to use their mind to create and control fire.

Radiesthesia
The use of dowsing to diagnose medical conditions and also to locate missing persons.

Raps - Rapping
Knocking sounds believed to be of paranormal origin.

Reading
The process of a Medium or Psychic giving information to a sitter.

Rebirth
Spiritual Regeneration - Reincarnation.

Recurrent Spontaneous Psychokinesis (RSPK)
A scientific term for poltergeist activity.

Regression
An hypnosis technique during which a person is mentally returned to an earlier time or previous life.

Reincarnation
The belief that the soul survives death and is reborn in a new body at a later time.

Remote Viewing (RV)
Using ESP, a person attempts to view and become physically aware of the surroundings being experienced by a remote sender who is at an undisclosed distant location.

Retrocognition
Knowledge of past events by paranormal means.

Sceptic
A person who is generally inclined to dismiss the existence of the paranormal.

Scrying
The process of staring into a reflective surface such as a mirror, water or crystal in order to obtain information by paranormal means.

Séance
A gathering of people for the purpose of communication with the spirit world.

Second Sight
See Clairvoyance

Sensitive
A person with some degree of Psychic ability.

Simultaneous Dream
A dream which has been experienced by more than one person.

Sitter
A person that has a session with a Medium.

Sitting
Another name for a Séance.

Sixth Sense
Another term for ESP.

Skeptic
American spelling of Sceptic.

Sleep Paralysis
During certain periods of sleep, the brain shuts-off voluntary control to certain muscles in order to prevent the body from responding to dreams. Occasionally, during waking there is a delay in the brain turning off this paralysis.

Soul
The spiritual being embodied inside a living person and thought, by some, to survive following the death of the physical body.

Spectre
The visible form of a disembodied spirit - a ghost.

Spirit
An entity with no physical body – a soul.
Thought by some to be the Great Spirit .. the one .. the universal consciousness.

Spirit Communication
Communication with the spirit world.

Spirit Guide
A spirit who helps a living person.

Spiritualism
The belief that communication between the spirit world and the living is possible usually with the assistance of a Medium.

Spontaneous Human Combustion (SHC)
The currently inexplicable cases of badly burnt bodies, their surroundings are usually virtually unburnt which suggests the fire started, and was contained, within the body.

Stigmata
Marks on the body which apparently occur spontaneously and match the marks on Christ's body caused by crucifixion.

Stone Tape Theory
This states that past events have been imprinted in the fabric of a building or the environment, akin to recording something on video, and under certain conditions these events are replayed giving rise to "ghostly" images and/or EVPs.

Subjective Paranormal Experience (SPE)
An experience which the recipient believes was of paranormal origin.

Succubus
An evil spirit which assumes a female form and that usually has sexual intentions towards sleeping men.

Supernatural
Something that is not usual or normal - paranormal.

Table-Tipping
Fingertips are placed on a table, if the table moves it may be interpreted as a form of spirit communication.

Tarot Cards
A deck of cards, usually numbering 78, that is used for fortune-telling.

Telekinesis
Movement of objects by paranormal means.

Telepathy
The communication between minds by extrasensory means.

Teleportation
The transportation of objects by psychokinesis.

Third Eye
The seat of the pineal gland, believed to be able to promote telepathic spiritual communication when "open".

Thoughtography
The paranormal ability by a person to place images on unexposed photographic film.

Trance Medium
A Medium who enters a trance state in order to communicate with the spirit world.

Transfiguration
A visible change in appearance or form.

Ufology
The study of unidentified flying objects.

Unidentified Flying Object (UFO)
A flying object which defies rational explanation, usually thought to be of extraterrestrial origin.

Vigil
A period during a paranormal investigation when observations of any unusual events are noted.

Vision
A religious apparition.

Vortex
A portal (gateway) to another dimension.
A doorway between this world and the spirit world.

W

White Magic
Magic used for good and to benefit others.

Wicca
A form of witchcraft and nature worship.

X

Xenoglossy
An ability to write or speak in a genuine language that has never been learnt.

Zener Cards
Used in ESP experiments.
A set of 25 cards - 5 with the symbol of a square, 5 with the symbol of a circle, 5 with the symbol of three wavy lines, 5 with the symbol of a star and 5 with the symbol of a cross.
